As my friend (and extremely savvy business owner) Melyssa Griffin says, list-building is one of the most important trains you can hop on if you want to build amazing sales. No surprise there, right?

I can hear you saying: “Yeah, yeah, Amber, we already know that – but how exactly are we supposed to build these amazing lists?”

Trust me, I hear you!

Think of your email list as a tiny seed – in order to make it grow, you just need to give it the sunlight, water, and food that it needs to shoot right out of the ground and bloom.

If your list is a seed, then Melyssa Griffin has one of the greenest thumbs I've ever seen. Less than two years ago, Melyssa's email list was tiny and barely growing. Four months later, she had grown her list to 8000 subscribers. Another 8 months later, she was up to 30,000 subscribers.

20 months from starting her list, she was up to 90,000 FREAKING SUBSCRIBERS!

Somehow, she figured out the care needed to coax that tiny seed into growing into an amazing list!

I actually get goosebumps hearing about her awesome list growth, not to mention her business success that came with it! Her product launches have been growing amazingly alongside her lists – this year, through her list-building, she is on track to do $1.2 million dollars.

This girl has got it going on!

How To Grow A Killer Email List

  1. Create a lead magnet. A lead magnet is a valuable freebie that you offer your potential subscribers in exchange for their email address. How will you know what to offer them? Ask! Set up a little survey beforehand and find out what would be more valuable to your audience. What do they struggle with most in your particular niche and what can you do to help them?
  2. Get your lead magnet some exposure (without paid ads). Now that you have an awesome lead magnet sorted out, how do you let people know about it? Well, obviously you can post it on your social media networks, but what if you want to get some brand new eyes on it – people who have never heard of you before? One easy way, says Melyssa, is to get yourself on some podcasts that your desired audience might be listening to! You can find lists of top and noteworthy podcasts in your niche on iTunes. Once you've come up with a list of podcasts that your audience may be listening to, reach out to them and pitch yourself as a guest. Just make sure that the topics you pitch to talk about flow into your lead magnet, since the goal is to direct people to it!
  3. Start a conversation. Once people start signing up for your lead magnet, create an automated email sequences to follow up with the people that downloaded it. Offer your services to help them deal with the issue that led them to download your lead magnet. Let them know that you're ready to talk about how you can help them out.
